Super Simple Homemade Fabric Softener…for Pennies a Load!

Who says you have to be a millionaire to enjoy soft, clean smelling clothes? This is a very easy homemade fabric softener recipe that has been passed down the generations. It consists of only four ingredients and makes your clothing super soft and incredibly clean smelling. With the ingredients that I use I have estimated this to cost approximately $.06 per load, when using a Downy Ball. You will need:

2/3 C. Baking Soda
2 & 2/3 C. Water
2 C. Vinegar
1/2 C. Fabric Softener (optional), I say optional on this one for the fragrance and extra softness when line drying, which is what I do year round. The clothes tend to be a bit stiffer when line dryed as opposed to using a dryer, so I add the 1/2 cup of fabric softener, or you can use hair conditioner. Purex is the cheapest and smells great. Walmart sells it for $2.98.

Mix 2/3 C. baking soda and 2/3 C. Water, (I use a wisk), mix well.

Add 2 C. Vinegar, VERY slowly, it will seem like a bad science experiment if you don’t. My daughter loves to watch it fizz :)

When that has stopped fizzing, add the remaining 2 cups water.

Finally add the 1/2 C. Fabric softener or conditioner of your choice, you can also use a couple drops of essential oils for fragrance.

Mix it all well. I will then pour it into an old fabric softener bottle for added fragrance.

There you have it! As easy as pie. Now all you have to do is use a Downy Ball, if you choose to, fill to the fill line, and enjoy your nice, clean smelling clothes for pennies a load!
